Today has been stunningly domestic so far. I supervised the kids making muffins, did dishes, went outside to water the strawberry pot and was seized with the desire to weed the old strawberry bed, which had a few survivors of the last two years of neglect. While pulling weeks I discovered that a blackberry had infiltrated as well, so I went to grab the pruning sheers just to get the big tall one down, and found the handle of the machete instead.

I've never actually used a machete before. It was SO MUCH FUN. I kind of went to town on many parts of the yard. I had forgotten how good it feels to hold a weapon, and though I never got to bladed weapons in my training, a lot of things transfer from staff/escrima.  (And I've been watching Forged in Fire, so I am regularly seeing someone do proper sword/knife usage. I love that show.)

I wonder if now that my back is more stable if there is a weapons based art I could train in again. Anything judo, aikido, or kickboxing-based is absolutely out.  I suppose there are tai chi sword forms? Though I don't know if that would really scratch the hitting-things-with-sticks urge.  And available time is, of course, a major issue, since right now I can't even manage yoga class.

Chen dao translates to machete pretty well, though you need to find someone who isn't super theoretical in their training. (Chen jian has its moments as well, but it's a pretty advanced form. But awesome.)

...Restita Dejesus would be a great person to talk to, since she does both Chen and a lot of cutting practice type stuff, but she's in West Seattle, which makes her pretty impractical for you.
