Today was the day of Dan's sleep deprivation EEG test, which meant that, even though we broke the keeping-him-awake time into shifts, I only got 4 hours of sleep last night, on top of a long accumulation of underslept nights. And went to PT in the morning (I graduated to all standing exercises!)

I feel asleep in my chair while he slept for the EEG.  We get results on Tuesday, though as I have poked around more I think this might have been a ruling-things-out test rather than a diagnosis confirming test, but at least it is forward motion.

Because of this, I will be heading super early at Norweson tomorrow to put up my art show stuff, and then coming home and dropping my car, which has lost the ability to find 2nd gear, off at the mechanic, and then maybe a nap, and then helping finish the kids' costumes for Sakuracon on Saturday.

If you are going to be there, O is going as "Sand Planet" Hatsune Miku (best costume ever, she will wear everything again in regular life but the wig), and D is going as the Prince from Hat in Time. He will be recognizable as himself; when you put a big teal wig on O, though, it gets more challenging to pick her out of a crowd. (There are always at least 3 Mikus wandering around.)

I will be at Norwescon Sunday late afternoon for art show checkout, but am badgeless.

(I'm really just the A/V person for this one, but it should be a very good time, and y'all should come)

This is the lightest Norwescon schedule I have ever had. I am toying with the notion of doing a trunk show. Or running over to SakuraCon on Sunday morning.

Well, technically a "special mention" from the Artist GOH's picks, but still. Woohoo!

And for one of my actually-attempting-astronomy pieces, too:

Heart of planetary nebula NGC 2818

(which went home with Theresa Halbert, who had the panels next to mine filled with her cool embroidered bags

  • a bunch of very old classic sf paperbacks

  • new costume pieces for the kids of the ears and tails variety

  • 12 fewer pieces of jewelry for my art show panels than I brought (woot!)

  • 2 solid cases of con crud; the kids are at home running fevers high enough for the "don't bring them to school until this has been gone for 24 hours" rule

  • a bunch of new panel ideas and the business cards of some art show exhibitors I want to follow up on as potential panelists, assuming I am doing the track again next year (I can't remember when that decision gets made.)

  • a list of books and comics and stories to track down that's several miles long, though a bunch of that is from the various #hugoeligible discussions as well

  • the joyful discovery that if our room is in wing 7 instead of 5 I need my cane less than a third of the time I did in previous years.

  • an entirely dry swimsuit, becuase it was waaay to cold to swim. I also wimped out on wearing my kigurumi outside the room.

Will hopefully also be discussing the Jim Hines cover project -- last year this was just Lee and I, and he ran with my initial offering and was amazeballs. This year can only be better.

I tend to be shy but please feel free to come up and talk; I still mostly look like that avatar, only with a very smurfy fauxhawk.  I will also occasionally have a short MetaKnight and AC:NL Isabelle in tow, and/or will need to run off and deal with the children associated with the costumes in question.

New, non-sucky pictures of (most of) the stuff I will be showing at Norwescon -- since I took these, they have all been nestled happily into their pendant bezels with the help of an industrial adhesive. As always, I pick the most difficult to photograph art forms I can. Some still don't have titles; Olivia helped with a fair chunk of naming. I have to have them all in the database by Saturday night, but I'm still looking for titles (or better titles) for several.

I’ve now filled out the bid tags for Norwescon next week. 13 pieces, and for the first time since my very first Norwescon art show, every single one is brand new. And only one (!) is a limited edition print, all the rest are mixed-media and jewelry of the OOAK variety.

This is entirely new territory for me; I haven’t faintest idea how much of this will be received, though I had a lot of fun making it, which is the most important part. It has been a great relief to move my fine art efforts to the “neat if it sells, but not something I must make work right now” category. Even if my album design work has sapped much of my art making time and energy, once I do get to go there, the lack of pressure is very freeing. Certainly, if I was worried about having to make a profit, doing experimental reverse painting on glass would not have been something I spent a lot of time on.  And frankly, knowing that my next forays into studio time will lack even the restriction of being genre appropriate is something I am looking forward to.

There is still framing to do, and two pieces need another hour or so to be completely finished, including the photoillustration, which has been sitting waiting in the “this needs something” state for almost two years; three days ago I realized that what it needed were birds and belugas, and I’m not quite done with making those photographs play well with a scene done entirely in Vue3d. And with the other I am still debating placement of the Buddha head. (I love that sentence for no good reason.)

There is a great deal “Why the hell not?” in this collection. And a certain amount of “I have no clue what to charge for this”, though her Javagoth-ness has been helpful on that front (and on many fronts, actually, I don’t think the jewelry thing would have really happened without her advice and pointers to good component sources.)

It is all going to be ridiculously hard to photograph, especially since I still haven’t picked up my studio lights. Or made a place to set them up.

I will be once again showing in the art show and talking on panels at this year’s Norwescon, March 28-31.

The programming goddess, long may she be praised, has sent my schedule; changes are of course always possible, that being the nature of events:

  • A Print By Any Other Name…   Friday 9:00pm-10:00pm
  • Poly Parenting   Saturday 10:00am-11:00am
  • Art Show Tour with Jeliza Saturday 5:00pm-6:00pm
(As usual I will be talking more about other people’s work than my own, despite the standard description in the program; I tend to do these with my Art History/Art Criticism grad student hat on.)
  • Copyright and You   Sunday 10:00am-11:00am Cascade 13
  • The Business of Art   Sunday 11:00am-Noon Cascade 13
  • Intro to Health At Every Size   Sunday 1:00pm-2:00pm

And now I need to go turn a big stack of little cradled boards into a big stack of little space paintings. :)
