I read just enough of the State of the Union address to realize I was about to fall back into despair, which isn't really useful, so I stopped. Reading reactions (to all of the past week, not just the speech) from people who've actually lived in authoritarian states was not exactly cheering either.

It is clear that 45 and the GOP leadership do not actually care about the economy, human rights, or the rule of law, so that's peachy. I don't know how to get through to people who just *don't care* about other people, or democracy, or not completely hosing the world our children will be living in.

I was going to write about something other than politics, but have now forgotten it all. Damnit. Other than that I have officially closed the album business to new clients until further notice, which might mean summer, but not might, because something has to give and that's the hardest. (Also the most lucrative, but uninterrupted hours of quality brain time are really, really hard to come by right now, and I can paint in two minute bursts if I need to. And it's not like I can make customers show up, though of course since I posted that today I got a flurry of inquiries.)

If it makes you feel better the Democrats don't really care either, it's just part of their schtick to make us think they do. Hmmm ... that is not helpful either, is it?

I purposely have not watched or read about the State of the Union or any of the reactions because I believe at this point it is all meant to rile us up and get us so stressed out we can't function. It's been helping me to focus completely on what I can control - that stuff around me in my community. Otherwise yeah, I just go into a state of deep despair. Which is worsened by the fact that both parties in my eyes have failed. Which leaves like ... Bernie Sanders and even he's suspect in my bitter eyes. So, I keep myself afloat by making it nice for as many folks as I can in my tiny section of the world cause everything else is so out of my control.

Eh, I actually have faith in a number of Democrats (Representative Jayapal is awesome), though the DNC leadership I don't have a ton of faith in, though even they don't, say, actually advocate for internment camps and tax breaks on private jets and gutting the EPA or hanging with white supremacists. I'll take that half a loaf if I can get it. I think Bernie is kind of a mess, though, and there pretty much isn't anyone I see yet to go against Trump for president that both would be good and wants to. At this point, I kind of hope he does something to piss off the Russian mob enough that they call in all his debts so he resigns or something.
