I do love the internet, but tweens acquiring & using the word "shemale" and the phrase "are you triggered" when it is pointed out that you shouldn't use it makes me want to burn it down. (not my kids, obviously.)
I had an adult on the internet do that not too long ago when she posted an article that said (literally) "I'm a better parent than you because I chose to raise my children outside the United States and now my kids won't be assholes like yours will". I commented that I liked the idea of promoting exposing kids to other cultures but it was unnecessary to bash every parent in the U.S. for raising their kids here. The poster (who has no kids) commented, "It sounds like you were triggered." To which I responded, "Triggered is when something benign reminds you of something traumatic - noticing that someone is being shaming to an entire group of people is not being triggered, it is being aware of bad behavior". Said adult has been avoiding me ever since. Which is good because it really pisses me off when people use "You must be triggered" in order to shut you down or shame you for pointing out their poor behavior.
